Currants and Jostaberry

from $15.00
Sold Out

(Ribes spp.)

Currants are an easy to grow, nutritious berry that can fruit even in somewhat shaded conditions (black currants handle shade better than red, or white). This makes them a great option for tree guilds. Currants are a popular fruit in Europe, slowly gaining popularity in the US. The leaves make a pleasant tea too. Easy to grow, and being very high in Vitamin C makes them a great low maintenance addition to any garden or food forest! Black currants are the most nutrient dense of all the currants, containing high amounts of anthocyanins. Plants grow to around 5’ x 5’. Black currants are partially self pollinating but do best with another variety around. Red and Pink currants are mostly self pollinating.

Hardy to zone 3.

1 year old bare root plants.

A brief description about cultivars we offer:

Titania - black currant with great flavor that ripens evenly. WPBR resistant. Very productive. Grows to around 4-5 feet.

Minaj Smyrou - black currant with great flavor. Developed in Bulgaria. Larger berries. WPBR resistant. Grows to around 4-5 feet.

Consort - black currant with medium size tart berries. A vigorous grower. WPBR resistant. Ripens in July. Grows to around 4-5 feet.

Ben Sarek - black currant with large berries that ripen in July. Developed in Scotland. Grows to around 3-4 feet.
