Cup Plant
(Silphium perfoliatum)
A beautiful native plant to Illinois in the aster family. Cup plants get their name from the opposite leaves joining together at the stem (perfoliate) creating a cup near the stem. Tree frogs often like to hang out in these due to the leaves collecting rain water, and birds will often stop for a drink. Cup plant creates colonies from short rhizomes. They attract many pollinators with their beautiful yellow aster flowers. Flowers are between 2.5 - 3 inches and there are 10-30 per plant. Once established, seems to do well in medium to medium wet soils, but handles drought just fine. Grows to around 6-8 feet. Local IL ecotype seed gathered by us. A great soil builder, and once established can create a privacy screen.
Zone 4 hardy.
