Pawpaw

from $15.00
Sold Out

(Asimina triloba)

Pawpaw is North Americas largest native fruit. Its in the custard apple family and has a very tropical flavor and smell. When tasting pawpaw, its hard to believe its native as far north as Michigan. Looking like a mango, and having flavors of coconut, vanilla, mango, banana, and pineapple, this is a fun one to grow! Pawpaw are a host plant to the beautiful zebra swallowtail. These seedlings are grown from wild fruits gathered in zone 5b selected for larger fruit size. Pawpaw is a slow tree to get established, often only growing 4-6 inches tall their first year while establishing a robust root system. After that, they seem to put on faster growth and can start fruiting in 5-6 years. They seem to prefer some shade in their first couple years. Pawpaws can grow to about 20’ tall x 15’ wide. At least two trees needed for pollination. Ideal to plant within 15 feet of each other.

Hardy to zone 5a. maybe 4b.

1 year old bare root seedlings.
