Chestnut (American + Chinese)
(Castanea mollissima)
Our Chinese chestnuts are grown from seed collected from grafted cultivar trees and open pollinated seedlings at Red Fern Farm. Chestnuts are a versatile food. They can be roasted whole, turned into a course grind flour for grits, or finer ground flour for breads and cakes. Lots of uses and absolutely delicious. Often called the bread tree. They are a staple food in some cultures. Chestnut trees prefer well draining, acidic soils. Planted in the right location, these seedlings can start producing nuts in 6 years. Chestnut trees can live hundreds of years! They are wind pollinated, so plant at least two near each other. Our chestnut seedlings have a fibrous root system for easier transplant.
Hardy to zone 5a, maybe 4b.
(Castanea dentata)
American chestnuts are smaller but sweeter. A blight wiped out the American chestnuts in their native range in the early 1900’s. The seedlings we grow are from mature trees that are producing nuts, but we don’t guarantee any blight resistance with these seedlings.
Hardy to zone 4b.
*We do not ship chestnut trees to MI, CA, FL, OR, WA, or LA due to quarantine restrictions.
